Shopify product SEO guide

Review Shopify product SEO titles and meta descriptions.

A blank custom SEO field can still produce a useful search listing. Start with the text Shopify uses for the product, then decide whether a separate search title or description would explain it more clearly. This guide covers a manual review and edit in Shopify Admin.

Free plan: up to 100 products and 500 variants per scan.

1. Check the text Shopify uses before adding an override

Choose a small group of products whose names or descriptions need a closer look. Open each product's search engine listing preview and compare it with the product information. Keep the current wording and the reason for any change in your review record.

Shopify's product CSV documentation says that a blank SEO title uses the product Title, and a blank SEO description uses the product Description. An empty custom field therefore does not establish that the listing has no text. Review the fallback wording first, then add a custom value only when it gives the product a clearer summary.

Treat the preview as a draft of how the listing might appear. Check the live product page too, especially if a theme or another app changes the page title or metadata.

2. Write a title and summary that fit the product

Use the product's type and a useful distinguishing detail in the search title. A brand name alone may leave someone unsure what is for sale. Keep the wording specific to this product and consistent with its visible name and description.

For the meta description, explain what the shopper will find on the page. Include details you can confirm, such as the material or capacity. Avoid repeating keywords, copying the same summary across unrelated products, or adding delivery and sale claims that may soon expire.

Example: separate the product name from the search listing text

Illustrative copy for a fictional product. Use these details only if the product page supports them. An SEO title edit is separate from editing the product's Title field.

3. Edit the product's search listing in Shopify Admin

These steps use desktop Shopify Admin. Keep a record of the current custom fields and product values so you can review or manually restore your own edits later.

  1. Open the product

Go to Products in Shopify Admin and click the product you want to edit. Confirm that its details match the item in your review.

  2. Open the search listing editor

In the Search engine listing section, click the pencil icon.

  3. Edit the search text

Enter your reviewed wording in Page title and Meta description. Read the preview and confirm that the text still matches the product page.

  4. Save the edit

Keep the URL handle as it is for a title or description edit, then click Save. Reopen the listing editor to confirm the stored values.

4. Keep length targets and URL changes in context

Shopify documents up to 70 characters for the SEO title and 320 for the SEO description in product CSV fields. Its writing guidance suggests titles of 60 characters or fewer and descriptions of about 160 characters. Use those shorter targets to help you draft concise text; there is no need to fill all the available space.

Google has no fixed character limit for the title or meta description text, and it may shorten a displayed result to fit the device width. A character count cannot guarantee that every word will appear. Put the product information a shopper needs near the beginning.

A title or description edit does not require a new URL handle. Changing the handle changes the product address, so treat it as a separate decision with its own redirect and link checks. Avoid changing a URL just to match new title wording.

5. Verify the saved text and follow up on search results

Check the live page after saving. Read the browser tab title and use the browser's page source to find the meta description tag. Confirm that they reflect the intended text, allowing for a store name your theme may add. If the result differs, investigate the theme or app that writes those tags before making more edits.

Google builds title links from several sources and primarily generates snippets from page content. It may choose different wording for a query. Search results can also lag behind a saved edit while the page is recrawled and processed; a new title or description does not guarantee a ranking improvement or a particular snippet.

Keep the changes with your catalog review record and check them again after product updates. Manual Shopify edits are outside Catalog Guardian's eligible app rollback history. If you also review product images, check their alt text against each visible view.
